A Portland Tradition Since 2009

Every great adventure has a beginning.

The Swashbuckler's Ball first set sail in 2009 as a benefit supporting the Portland Pirate Festival, a celebration of maritime history and pirate culture. What began as a gathering of pirates and kindred spirits soon grew into something much greater: an annual celebration of music, camaraderie, creativity, and charitable giving.

Organized in its early years by members of Portland's pirate community, including PDXYAR and The Dread Ship Outrageous Fortune, the Ball brought together costumed revelers, musicians, performers, artisans, and volunteers, all united by a love of adventure and a desire to give back.

Over the years, the Swashbuckler's Ball has evolved into Portland's premier Pirate Prom, transforming venues into immersive worlds of themed taverns, bustling merchant markets, live entertainment, and unforgettable revelry.

Though the spectacle has grown, the spirit that launched the first voyage remains unchanged.

Revelry for a Reason

From its earliest days, the Swashbuckler's Ball has been about more than a grand night out.

Originally established to help support the Portland Pirate Festival, the Ball expanded its charitable mission to benefit organizations serving the greater community.

By 2012, the event was raising funds for DoveLewis, Portland's nonprofit emergency animal hospital. Today, charitable giving remains a cornerstone of the Swashbuckler's Ball. Through our annual charity raffle, featuring treasures generously donated by local businesses, artists, makers, and community members, we continue the tradition of turning a night of celebration into an opportunity to make a difference.

As a volunteer-run nonprofit event, the Ball is made possible by the dedication and generosity of the community that has supported it throughout the years.

More than fifteen years after its beginnings, the Swashbuckler's Ball remains a celebration of the people who bring it to life.

From the volunteers who transform our venues to the musicians, merchants, performers, and guests who return year after year, every member of our crew has helped shape its legacy.

As we prepare for our fifteenth grand celebration in 2027, we remain committed to the same guiding principles that inspired our first voyage: community, creativity, camaraderie, and giving back.
